Here is my testimony. Two years ago I had 5mm and 6mm pockets around my molar teeth. My dentist asked if I had thought about having periodontal surgery. I have a story that you might want to share. It concerns a patient in her early thirties whom I have been treating for periodontal disease for about a year and a half, unsuccessfully. Carol came to me first about January 1991. She presented as an attractive young housewife with two young children. There were no real stress factors in her life. But she presented with heavy generalized calculus deposits and moderate to severe bone loss that had already resulted in migration of teeth and diastema formations in several anterior areas. Her main concern was cosmetics at the time. She was highly teachable and highly motivated to do whatever it took to save her teeth, once I had explained the seriousness of her problem to her. 

Carol was the model patient. I placed her on a rotary appliance twice a day, flossing twice a day, and inter dental stimulators five times a day. Her compliance was incredible. I scheduled appointments for periodontal scaling and root planing under local anesthesia. In one month her gums were in almost incredible health. Almost. But upon periodontal probing they still bled. Every three months I had to numb all of Carol’s teeth to root plane them, and while her compliance continued to be incredible, I just couldn’t get rid of that little bit of gingival bleeding on probing. We bonded the diastemas, adjusted the occlusion, and got her in great shape – almost. In June 1992 she came in early for her periodontal maintenance visit, because she was having some little problems. Before treating her, I periodontally probed all her teeth – and got the usual bit of bleeding. Feeling a little dejected I told Carol that we were losing the battle to save her teeth if we couldn’t stop that bleeding. At this time she was still using the rotary device twice a day, flossing correctly twice a day (I checked her technique,) and using gum stimulators twice a day. 

I had just received my own Hydro Floss unit the day before. It was on my desk, still in the package. On impulse I asked Carol to take my unit home with her, use it according to instructions for thirty days and come back for full periodontal probing again. Patients with red, inflamed, bleeding gingiva with 4mm to 6mm pocketing have regained significant attachment with pink, firm, gingiva and no bleeding. I was told to take a look at your Hydro Floss by Dr. Joe Warnier. I had been looking at them, but had not purchased one. I made an order and had my wife start using this irrigator and I started also. This unit did what I was told it would do and that is improve the health of the gingivae and reduce bleeding. The ability to slow plaque reduction is amazing. I have always had calculus form quickly on my lower incisors. After using it for about two weeks the calculus started popping off. This is very impressive, because we have all bought instruments that were supposed to work but did not. I would like to report that it is not as good as they say, but "better". Since 1966, I have been looking for this but had never found it. Periodontal disease is initiated by microbial colonies that form on the teeth and are referred to as plaque. It consists of both moving and stationary bacteria that grow on the teeth next to the gingival margins then progressively invade the crevices where they cause tissue inflammation and bone degeneration. Unfortunately, conventional tooth brushing, flossing, and mouth rinsing do not effectively control these disease producing colonies. Controlled scientific studies support this claim. Hydro Floss unites were given to 12 patients with destructive periodontitis. Specific instructions were given to each patient for its use (water volume, pressure, temperature and control). These patients were extensively studied while using the Hydro Floss over a period of 4 weeks without the utilization of chemotherapeutic agents, antibiotics or dental floss. The efficacy of the therapeutic use of the Hydro Floss was monitored by phase contrast microscopic examination of subgingival plaque specimens. After 4 weeks all parameters were measured; (pocket depth, bleeding, mobility, retention), showing statistically significant improvements. From the observed changes in the studied variables, sucular bleeding index, gingival index, and plaque index, one can conclude that Hydro Floss irrigation decreased periodontal disease in these 12 cases.
